On their first morning when Emily was in her dressing room, a note slipped out from behind the
or. She was curious and read the note. It said “come to The Great Wall at Juyongguan (one of the
three great passes) and you will find another note”. She told the others about the note and they decided not to
tell Betts’s parents, but go and try and find the second note. So the mystery adventure began, but they would
have to wait until morning because it was getting dark.

They got up very early the next day at sunrise and had a good breakfast before setting off. They decided to
get a tour bus which would take them straight to The Great Wall at Juyongguan. When they finally arrived they
decided to split up to cover more ground quickly. It was hard work and it took a few hours of searching before
Betts finally found the second note. She met up with the others and they were all very excited. The second note
said “Go to another part of The Great Wall at Badaling this time”. So they went back to their hotel as they were
very tired.
After a good night’s sleep they all woke up and started making plans to go to Badaling. They discovered
that this was the first section open to tourism in 1957 and a bit further away from Beijing. They went to ask
Betts’s parents if they could go, but they said no because they had made other plans. So they visited Tiananmen
Square and the Forbidden City. They were out all day and it was very tiring, so they all went straight to sleep
when they got back to the hotel.
The next day, they finally got to Badaling. They took the cable car up the mountain which they all enjoyed
and could see for miles. When they got off, they walked for a few minutes before they saw something white
sticking out of the stone wall. They managed to pull it out and discovered it was the third and final note! It said
keep walking in this direction for another 500 metres and you will see the letters S and C carved into the wall
at the top”. When they found the letters they noticed the stone was loose, so they all helped to lift the stone.
Hidden behind they could see a roll of paper! When they unrolled the paper they saw it was an ancient scroll
and probably very important. So they hurried to the history museum to show the curator. He was very
impressed! They had been looking for this scroll for many years and as a reward he gave them all a small gold
medal. The children were very proud.
